TwitterHead Writers Unite – Hi5 and a HUG

Posted: February 27, 2012 in Uncategorized

Last year at this time, I would have been a proud member of the the “Twitter is such a waste of time”  club.  I could’ve been the President.  Been there, done that.

Yes, Twitter Rocks

But I’ve grown older and wiser in the last 12 months.  I followed the advice of others in preparation for the publication of my novel and began to spend time building a (…….don’t say, ….don’t say, it…..)   platform.  uggh.    Gotta have folks know who you are, right?  It is a pretty simple formula –  No platform = itty bitty sales.

Twitter was the last place that I thought I would invest much of my time.  Already had a few dozen friends on FB and that was the place where friends connect, right?

Twitter has been a true godsend.  Here I come, diving into a brand new world with my new little baby to show off (da book) and damnation if Twitter hasn’t delivered for me in SPADES. (had to use that stupid phrase, still don’t know what it means.)   Yes – I have friends on Twitter.  They outnumber my friends on the almighty FB !!!    Most of them are writers, just like me.  All of us struggling through the jungle of book marketing, trying to find our way.  And to stretch this metaphor just a little further – Many of my writer friends have already cut a path.  They’ve been battling the vines and dangerous animals and they’ve left me a trail.  It’s a trail that is not completely smooth, but a trail nonetheless.  Furthermore, they are EXCITED to show me the way.  I have gained a HUGE AMOUNT of support, advice, guidance, and just plain old friendship.  These are some pretty great folks.  (pssst, and I JUST GOT STARTED ON TWITTER,   hi5 on that)

Oh, and did I mention that folks are buying my book??   Yes indeed.  And a big chunk of the sales are due to Twitter.  Imagine that.  It’s just like killing two birds with one stone.   (Don’t mean to offend the Twitter folks, you know, the logo being a bird and everything.)

So – here’s another formula:     (RT’s +  SO’s)   X    (Grow your Followers  + be yourself )  / Don’t overdo the advert.  =  One Big TwitterHead

Math class dismissed.

    Very good words and my experience with Twitter versus Facebook runs alongside your own. In June of 2011 I was told to join Twitter by my boss and I said, “Really?” I’d heard of Twitter but had no clue about what a Tweet was, how to go about Following people. I just decided to be myself from the very first moment, and that’s the best advice I keep getting. Be organic. Enjoy the people you meet. Laugh. Thank you for pointing this out.

    I’m with you on this! I can’t even tell you all of the things I’ve learned from my twitter/writer friends in the past 9 months. It’s been a wonderful experience, and definitely different than facebook.

  3. Exactly! The perfect equation for a writer. We’re the lucky generation of wordspinners. ;-}

  4. as a twitter newbie, i have to agree the writing community is great – it even led me to your blog!! 🙂

    I guess I was supposed to be your vice president. August of 2010 I told a friend “No way in HELL I am going to join (insert swear word here) Twitter and talk about what I’m going to make for dinner.” 4668 followers later, I am SO eating those words. I love every minute on Twitter and love chatting with my tweeps….but I don’t talk about what I am going to make for dinner……

  6. Oh no, I though Facebook was the dark side. Never thought I would blog either. Black and blue no tweeting….. will have to look at it now. Thanks for the honest and human appraisal, and good luck with your book! I will have to check out your site a bit more to see what you have written…. signed mum from the land before ebay (Liz)

  7. Glad to hear that you you are tweeting your way to global internet domination, or at least a buttload of book sales. Social media does work well, when it works. When it doesn’t, major suckage. But you knew that…

  8. Twitter introduced me to some blinking avi of a green-haired dude, oh wait, that was you! Glad to know you, my friend.

  9. I’ve been on twitter for a little while, have an okay following but I’ve barely been able to tread water. I needed your post today to encourage me to continue on. Thanks!

  10. Newish twitter user here. Followed a link from twitter to your place, so I know you’re right. What’s an SO?
