When writing and re-writing your book, keep “Quality” as your number one goal.
Here’s a brief thought (aren’t those your favorites?) – What factors go into determining Quality and Pricing when it comes to eBooks?
Remember the “Time Investment” issue – When I buy eBooks, my main consideration is not the “price” but the “cost” of investing my time. Will my time invested in this book give me a “return” (pleasure) ? Should I “spend” my limited resource (time) on this book?
This is the key factor for me as a reader. Therefore, I try to keep this in the forefront of my mind when I construct a novel. To me, this is where the “Quality” factor trumps “Price” every time. Consider that the price for most eBooks is something that anyone can afford. Hell, lots of folks spend a couple of bucks a day on much more frivilous items. That being the case, readers ARE careful to “spend” their time carefully. Time is a very valuable resource for all of us. Time is finite. The number of books that can be read is infinite (well, almost).
So make your book a quality product. Entice your readers to turn the page quickly. Give them characters and plot lines that they can relate too. Make your story exciting, romantic, thrilling, smart, surprising, etc. These are the adjectives that you will want your readers to mention to their friends when they recommend your book. Get your book edited by a professional (I used two!) I’m quite certain that if you deliver a quality product, the positive “word-of-mouth” regarding your novel will almost certainly NOT include what the price is.
Good points to remember! Especially these:
“Entice your readers to turn the page quickly. Give them characters and plot lines that they can relate too. Make your story exciting, romantic, thrilling, smart, surprising, etc.”
thank u dearie!
Exactly.

Well said.I agree, you should use at least two professional editors to clean up your book. Very important. A messy MS will and has stopped me on the first page.
I agree, that’s the kind of literature that saves us time and feeds the soul.
“There is no moral or immoral book. Books are well written or not.” Oscar Wilde
Important points well made, Andy! Quality definitely trumps quantity in the literary world, which should be a relief to all hard-working writers. We can have a huge following via social media and write loads of words and pages, but if we fail to sharpen our skills, invest the time and thought necessary for quality work, what good is any of it?
smile!
I’d also add that price can matter to a certain extent, IMHO. 😉 It seems to me that people disregard free books pretty often. I believe there’s something to be said for reasonable prices, based on what makes the most sense business and industry wise.
well stated!!! thanks!
Quality. Vitally important.
And you’re right. It’s not the cost of the book… It’s the cost of a reader’s time.
As a reader, I don’t want to waste my time on a book that doesn’t deliver.
As a writer I don’t want to waste valuable time reading a substandard book.
And I’m convinced that an editor, or maybe two, is absolutely necessary.
Great post. : )
Great post! I agree. I also believe that there are quality standards in how ebooks are converted, the cover design, etc. And to your point on the editing: print books have the luxury (if done well) of the positive aesthetic experience. Ebooks don’t have that, except for perhaps a nice thumbnail cover design (still important). Typos and bad writing in ebooks are so much more egregious because the quality of the text is all the book has to stand on–it’s not a physical experience in the same way that reading a print book is, so people won’t buy it for gifts or as a physical token to have on a shelf. Ebooks are ALL about the content! You have a fantastic blog here; if you’re interested in a fantastic blog for indie authors, please check me out! wiseinkblog.com
thanks dearie, you made my day!!
I love your blog post because you talk so much sense. Most people expect instant success these days and I think that’s one of the reasons why indie publishing has become so popular: no one can stop people from putting poorly edited, half finished pieces of work out there. I’m NOT saying every indie author is like this – I know several brilliant ones. But then people wonder why their books don’t sell at all. If you have a good book it WILL sell no matter what the price. I try my best to make every book of mine the best it can possibly be and that’s all you can do.
thanks so much laura, very kind comments…. i couldn’t agree more about the time it takes
and the importance of making your work as perfect as you can!
No problem Andy, you’re welcome. I have also blogged about a similar issue and linked your post to mine. Here’s the link http://lkwattsconfessions.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/quality-writing-will-sell-itself.html
